Antique Mounted Japanese Wakizashi, with 20-5/8'' shinogi-zukuri signed blade, signed on tang: ''Takata ju Yukihisa'', who was a Bungo School smith. Blade dates from the late Koto period (1580) to the Shinto period (1650). The temperline is a faint series of peaked bumps called ''sanbon suji'' hamon. Condition is very good overall. Blade is bright with a couple spots of small forging flaws in non-critical areas. The tsuba guard is iron with copper decorations of plum branches and blossoms, and is unsigned. Handle is covered in rayskin and has its original dark blue silk wrapping showing heavy soiling from use. The menuki consist of a god, done in copper and shakudo, and a shakudo crane. The fuchi and kashira handle fittings feature a Shinto shrine gate or Torii, with pine trees, and a monk or priest with an umbrella, and are done in shakudo-nanako with gold. The saya scabbard is two-toned black and copper-colored lacquer; saya fittings are of a handachi style done in shakudo and gold. The kurikata (cord mount) on the scabbard appears to be a later replacement. The black woven cord on the saya, is tied in a traditional manor. Est.: $500-$1,000.
