Antique Pair of Large-Bore European Flintlock Horsemen's Pistols, perhaps Dutch or Belgian, NVSNs, approx. .69 cal., 9'' round barrels without sights or maker's or proof marks; military style lockplates with rounded rear teats, unmarked but for unidentified ''crown/ON'' and ''crown/W'' proof marks at top between the cock and integral steel pan; brass furniture includes loop trigger guards with long lower tangs reaching to the thick, flat oval buttcaps having fixed lanyard rings, nosecaps, and barrel wedge escutcheons; varnished walnut fullstocks. Mfg'd ca. the 1830s period, about the time percussion arms were being introduced to the military. Condition to both pistols is matching and about very good. Iron surfaces have a cleaned ''armory bright'' finish, the barrels likely having been cleaned of moderate to heavy pitting that would have obscured any markings, brass with light patina (one pistol with 4 ''kill notches'' on upper trigger guard tang). Stocks are solid and mostly smooth with scattered marks from age and military use, and a later coat of varnish. Actions are crisp; smoothbores are clean showing moderate to heavy black powder pitting; pistols appear to be in original flintlock configuration, with unbushed touchholes and original parts. The modern wood case of varnished mahogany is lined in red baize cloth, compartmented for the pair of pistols, and in very good condition. Est.: $800-$1,200/Lot. (Antique)
