Antique Heavy Barrel Percussion Plains or Sporting Rifle, by Jacob Fisher, NVSN, .40 cal., 34.5'' heavy octagonal barrel with large dovetailed blade front and notched rear sights, marked with maker's name on top flat, has heavy rib below; serpentine back-action lockplate and hammer appear to have been altered from flintlock via the drum-and-nipple method; brass furniture includes scrolled finger-rest trigger guard, small teardrop-shaped sideplate opposite lock, crescent buttplate having long tangs, single barrel band, and two ferrules retaining the brass-tipped hickory ramrod; varnished artificially-striped maple halfstock has raised aprons on either side of lock, a gracefully carved left-side cheekpiece, and lead nosecap. Double set triggers. Condition is good to very good. Metal surfaces retain no original finishes but a dark gunmetal gray-brown, brass is moderately toned. Stock is sound and with an added coat of varnish, overall showing nicks and dings from age and long field use. Action does not hold cock; bore is dirty with dark overall erosion but sharp rifling. Est.: $300-$500. (Antique)
