Antique Sharps New Model 1863 "Straight Breech" Metallic Cartridge Conversion Saddle-Ring Carbine, #81400, .50-70 CF cal., 22" round barrel has pinned low-blade front sight, sliding-leaf rear marked "R.S. Lawrence/Patented/Feb. 15th, 1859"; straight breech receiver has left-side maker's name and 1848 patent date ahead of saddle bar and ring, Lawrence name and patent date at top-right, and "C. Sharps' Patent/Oct. 5th, 1852" below, serpentine lever drops breechblock open for loading/auto ejection, flat-face hammer cocks action; oil-stained forestock retained by a single band, matching buttstock has left-side "RTS" (R.T. Safford) inspector's cartouche and "DFC" (David F. Clark) cartouche (added at time of conversion), lacks patchbox but has original notched crescent buttplate. Carbine was refinished in blue at the Sharps factory, barrel got a new 3-groove bore-liner, and a new buttstock was installed during conversion. Condition is fine retaining approx. 40% darkening barrel blue having scattered blotchiness, receiver with 50% blue and light peppering at right side. Stocks are sound and smooth with sharp "RTS" and faint "DFC" cartouches (perhaps lightly sanded and re-oiled), show lovely grain and color. Edges are sharp, markings are generally soft due to factory refinish. Action is crisp, bore is bright with sharp rifling. Est.: $2,000-$3,000. (Antique)
