Antique Single-Shot Percussion Sporting Shotgun, NVSN, 12 ga., 33.75'' round-to-octagonal barrel has cannon turning at round-octagon juncture and two platinum bands at breech, marked ''London'' on top flat, has long engraved top tang; serpentine lockplate is floral engraved with a scene of waterfowl amid rushes, marked ''Gillespie,'' matching hammer; iron furniture includes engraved loop trigger guard with fancy front and long rear tangs, shotgun style buttplate having a long engraved top tang, three ferrules retaining the plain hardwood ramrod (a modern replacement); English walnut halfstock is checkered at bottom wrist, has a vacant German-silver oval nameplate at belly, two oval German-silver barrel wedge escutcheons, and a pewter nosecap. Mfg'd ca. 1880s-90s. Condition is very good retaining no original metal finishes but an overall gunmetal gray patina, with scattered light erosion (especially at nipple area), minor marks, and mostly clear engraving and lettering. Stock is sound and smooth with light wear to checkering, scattered use-handling marks, and much finish. Action is smooth (percussion nipple is a replacement); smoothbore is clean showing scattered moderate black powder etching. Est.: $200-$400. (Antique)
