Antique Smith & Wesson First Model Schofield Single Action Army Revolver, #587, .45 S&W CF cal., 7" round barrel marked with maker's name, address, and 1865-69-71 patent dates on left ejector housing, "Schofield's Pat. Apr. 22d, 1873" at right, has full-length topstrap; fluted 6-shot round cylinder is marked "587" on rear face, has auto extraction; barrel and cylinder unit tip-up on large S&W front frame hinge, frame has hinged barrel catch at top-rear, irregular left sideplate, integral trigger guard and gripstraps marked "US" and "587" at butt, with 2-pc. oil-finished walnut grips. Mfg'd ca. 1875. Condition is good retaining traces of blue in barrel rib and cylinder flutes, otherwise being gunmetal gray-brown with scattered light oxidation, generally sharp edges and markings. Grips are sound with light marks, wear at sides of butt, added varnish. Barrel hinge is tight, action is crisp, bore is bright showing occasional light erosion and sharp rifling. Est.: $2,500-$3,500.
