Antique Springfield Model 1884 Trapdoor Single-Shot Breechloading Rifle, with bayonet, scabbard and frog, #225483, .45-70 Gov't. CF cal., 32-5/8'' round barrel with block-blade front (doubles as bayonet lug) and adjustable Buffington rear (marked ''R'' for Rifle) sights, marked ''V/P/(eaglehead)/P'' and ''R'' at breech; trapdoor breechblock is marked ''US/Model/1884'' at hinge; flat lockplate has ''(spread-wing eagle)'' and ''U.S./ /Springfield'' under latch; steel fittings include two-piece trigger guard with sling swivel at front, curved buttplate marked ''US'' at top screw, two spring-retained bands (top with stacking swivel), nosecap, and slotted button-tip rod; oil-stained walnut fullstock has rectangular ''SWP'' (Master Armorer and Chief Inspector Samuel W. Porter) over ''1889'' cartouche at left wrist, and ''C.B'' over a fancy encircled ''P'' on belly. Condition is very good, the barrel and lockplate retain approx. 40% original blue mixing with age brown and light surface erosion, the other metal surfaces gunmetal gray-brown. Stock is smooth with light marks (heavier at buttstock) and fine cartouche. Good edges and markings, strong and smooth action, clean bore with good rifling. Bayonet marked ''U.S.'' at throat has smooth metal with scattered rusting, scabbard shows much blue and light discoloration, frog is fine. Est.: $500-$750. (Antique)
