Antique Springfield Model 1868 Trapdoor Infantry Rifle, #93, .50 CF cal., 32.5'' round barrel with standard sights, marked ''93'' at left breech, ''93'' at front of receiver, trapdoor with ''1868/(eaglehead)/U.S.'' at hinge; beveled lockplate marked ''(spread-wing eagle)/U.S./Springfield'' below latch and ''1863'' to rear; steel fittings include two-piece trigger guard with sling swivel (swivel missing), curved buttplate marked ''US'' at top screw, two spring-retained bands (front with sling swivel), nosecap, tulip-head rod; one-piece oil-stained walnut fullstock. Mfg'd ca. 1868. Condition is good to very good, the metal surfaces showing a smooth to lightly-etched gunmetal- gray-brown with heavier pitting at bands, nosecap, trigger guard and buttplate. Stock is solid but with scattered scars/cracks/breaks, deep notches cut into stock comb, and no left-side inspector's cartouche. Clear markings; action is strong; bore is shiny with erosion toward muzzle and defined rifling. A scarce, low-numbered early rifle, made in 1868 and designed by Springfield Master Armorer Erskine S.
