Antique U.S. Springfield Model 1795 Single Shot Flintlock Musket, Type I, NVSN, .69 cal., 44.5" round barrel is marked "V" at breech (other markings obscured by pitting); beveled lockplate with elongated rear teat is marked "(spread-wing eagle)" over script "US" below integral pan and "Springfield" in a horizontal reverse-arch behind the flat reinforced cock; iron furniture includes trigger guard having a sling loop at front, buttplate marked "180?" at top tang, serpentine sideplate, three spring-retained barrel bands (top of double-strap type also acts as nosecap, has brass blade front sight and retains the button-tip ramrod, middle with sling loop, lower with extended lower profile). Fullstock of oil-stained walnut has slim wrist and raised aprons at either side of lock. Mfg'd ca. 1803. Condition is good to very good, the iron surfaces with a mostly smooth dark-brown tone having scattered oxidation and heavy pitting at barrel breech, missing top tang and floorplate screws, lower sling loop screw is an ill-fitting replacement, muzzle bayonet lug was ground away. Stock shows the effects of advanced age and hard military use, having the comb cut down, cracks, repairs and filler at wrist, top tang, and sideplate area. Lock appears to be original flintlock with correct parts; touchhole probably was re-bushed, and ground flat. The entire gun appears to wear an overall coat of dark varnish and likely added color to metal. Action functions weakly, smoothbore shows moderate-to-heavy black powder erosion. Est.: $1,500-$2,000.
