Antique U.S. Springfield Model 1870 Allin Trapdoor Rifle, Altered from a U.S. Model 1863 Type II Rifle-Musket, with Leather Sling, NVSN, .50 CF cal., 32.5" round barrel has block-blade front (serves as a bayonet lug) and adjustable-leaf rear sights; receiver with long trapdoor is marked "Model/1870/(eagle head)/(crossed arrows)/US" at hinge; beveled lockplate is marked "(spread-wing eagle holding olive branches)" to left of "U.S./Springfield" under trapdoor latch and "1865" to rear of hammer; steel fittings include 2-pc. trigger guard with sling loop at front, curved buttplate, two barrel bands (front with sling loop), nosecap, and slotted/grooved ramrod. Fullstock of oil-stained walnut has remnant inspector's cartouche opposite lock, illegible initials behind rear guard tang. Mfg'd 1865, altered ca. 1870-73. Condition is very good showing overall clean and bright metal with a bit of pitting atop the trapdoor and subtly-mottled case colors on the lockplate. Stock is sound and smooth with occasional light marks (likely having been smoothed and re-oiled). Action is strong and crisp, bore is clean showing overall light oxidation and fine rifling. Russet leather sling is sound and smooth with just light age cracking. Est.: $900-$1,200. (Antique)
