Antique U.S. Springfield Trapdoor Single Shot Infantry Rifle, #462319, .45-70 CF cal., 32.625" round barrel, block-blade front (doubles as bayonet lug) and Buffington rear (marked "R" for rifle) sights, marked "V/P/(eagle head)/P" and "A" at breech; folding trapdoor breechpiece is marked "US/Model/1884" at hinge; flat lockplate is marked "(spread-wing eagle and shield)" to left of "U.S./Springfield" under latch; steel fittings include 2-pc. trigger guard with sling loop at front, grooved trigger, curved buttplate marked "US" at top screw, two lock screw escutcheons, two spring-retained barrel bands (top with stacking swivels), nosecap and slotted-grooved ramrod. Oil-stained fullstock is marked with "SWP/1889" (S.W. Porter) inspector's cartouche at left wrist, encircled "P" at belly. Mfg'd 1889. Condition is near excellent retaining approx. 98% original finishes. Stock shows a few minor dings, lovely grain, reddish color and original finish. Action is crisp, bore is brilliant with sharp rifling. Est.: $1,000-$1,500. (Antique)
