Antique Unmarked (but Likely American) Large-Bore Percussion Sporting Rifle, NVSN, .54 cal., 37'' octagonal barrel has dovetailed buckhorn-style sights and a heavy under-barrel rib with two steel ferrules that retain the plain hickory ramrod; undecorated serpentine lockplate and hammer, brass furniture includes scrolled finger-rest trigger guard, crescent buttplate with long lower tang having a pineapple-like front terminal; varnished one-piece ''perch belly'' halfstock has two brass barrel key escutcheons, a German-silver openwork sideplate and fancy nosecap. Mfg'd ca. 1850s-1880s. Condition is very good, the iron parts having a mostly smooth gunmetal-brown tone (pitting in area of nipple), the brass with light aged patina. Stock is smooth and sound but for 1'' cracks at sideplate screw and ahead of nipple bolster. Action functions; smoothbore is clean with scattered light black-powder erosion. Est.: $600-$900. (Antique)
