Antique Winchester Model 1873 1st Model Lever Action Rifle, #18306, .38 WCF cal., 24'' octagon barrel, walnut forend and straight grip stock with brass trapdoor, dovetailed front sight with nickel silver blade, semi-buckhorn elevator rear sight. Right side of the buttstock has an inlaid brass cross which has been attached with brads. Barrel with two-line ''King's Improvement'' address; upper tang reads ''MODEL 1873'', with foliate design. Mfg'd 1876. The caliber is not indicated on the lifter but rifle chambers a .38-40 snap cap and bore measures approx. .410 using calipers. Rifle is in overall antique good condition. Metal surfaces have been lightly cleaned and blued surfaces have turned to a brown and gray patina, with some darker spotting. Additionally, there are intermittent areas of cleaned pitting. Barrel address and other markings are mostly clear. Wood shows age and wear consistent with the rest of the rifle. Left side of the forend has an approx. 2.5" x .25" sliver of wood missing at the top front where it meets the barrel, with a 1.5" crack continuing towards the rear. Right side of the handguard has an approx. 5" crack going from the front towards the rear where it meets the barrel. The area around the buttplate shows oil staining. Good action; bore is bright appearing to have been cleaned, rifling is faint and there are areas of cleaned pitting. Est.: $900-$1,200. (Antique)
