Antique ''XL Derringer'' Single-Shot Spurtrigger Cartridge Pocket Pistol, #493, .41 RF cal., 2-9/16'' octagonal barrel with blade front sight pivots to side for loading/auto extraction, marked ''XL Derringer'' on top flat and ''Pat. Apr. 5, 1870'' on left angled flat; iron frame has standing breech, central hammer, integral spurtrigger sheath and ''bird's head'' gripstraps; two-piece varnished rosewood grips. Mfg'd ca. 1870s, originally with blued barrel and nickel-plated frame. Condition is near fine. Barrel retains traces of original blue and is a smooth gunmetal tone; frame retains 96% bright original plating, with very light speckling to right side; hammer shows muted case colors. Grips are smooth showing light wear and much original varnish. Action is crisp; bore is bright with light frosting and sharp rifling; barrel hinge is sound; edges and markings are sharp. Made by Hopkins & Allen, these ''XL Derringers'' are quite scarce, as only approx. 2,000 were mfg'd. 150 years ago; iron frame examples like this one are even scarcer and more desirable. Est.: $600-$800. (Antique)
