Austrian M1842 Engineers Rifle .73 Cal. NVSN
"Indian" used gun. This is a Austrian Model 1842 Engineers musket, basically a shortened M1842 musket, 33 1/4 barrel, bayonet lug, .73 Cal. Austrian proofs are found on the triggerguard, escutcheon, and barrel bands, including the double headed eagle. The middle band is missing, but the remaining two bands are stamped "34". rear sight missing, a small notch has been brazed in the dovetail. only cocks & fires at half cock. Musket has seen very hard use, consistent with native American use, metal has turned a dark brown patina, pitted. The stock has been decorated with brass tacks which appear contemporary with the period. They have been on there a very long time. The French used the M1842 in Mexico, the the Confederate Government obtained over 600,000 of them during the civil war, mostly by the Army of Tennessee, including the siege of Vicksburg. That would explain how an Austrian rifle ended up on the North American continent that many years ago. Very Interesting rifle. NRA Condition-Fair. Antique Firearm
