Austrian Model 1867 Werndl Breechloading Single-Shot Military Musket, #872, 11mm CF cal., 33.25" round barrel has block-blade front sight and large graduated folding-leaf rear, bayonet lug 4" below right muzzle, marked "1", "St 83" and "Wn 73"; receiver marked at top with conjoined "OE" and "WG", has unique rotating breechblock with rebounding firing pin, 4" spring on tang to hold in place; long back-action lock has tiny sunken round "(lion's face)" mark over "872", hammer marked "B" and "3" at left side; steel fittings include trigger guard with long finger-rest, buttplate marked "V.L St. WB./5212", 2 clamping bands (top with sling swivel), nosecap, slotted ramrod. Oil-stained walnut 3/4 stock stamped "W" atop comb, has smaller marks and sling swivel at belly. Condition is very good showing smooth gray-brown gunmetal (bit of roughness forming at top of buttplate) having sharp edges and markings. Dark finished stock shows scattered dings and nicks from military use yet is sound. Action is strong and crisp, bore shows overall light etching and deep/sharp rifling. Est.: $1,200-$1,800. (Antique)
