Cal. 44 RF. S# 8324. Bbl. 22" oct. to rnd. Blade front sight w/ replacement 2 leaf rear sight. The Ballard was a sturdy single shot rifle first mfg. by Ball & Williams in 1862-1865. Most of the 15,600 rifles & carbines were for Civil War military orders. Lever operated single shot action. Bbl. & receiver have matching S#'s. Left side of breech block is numbered "559". Band fastened walnut forearm & straight grip stock w/ steel carbine buttplate. Left side of forearm & toeline of stock have "U.S" stamped markings that appear sharp & fresh. Stock & forearm lack the usual "MM" cartouches. CONDITION: bbl. blue is fading to an even brown w/ 1 added screw hole through very weak markings. Action finish has a lighter mottled brown appearance. Extractor has replacement coil spring & brass actuation lever. Sanded & refinished stock are undersized at buttplate showing scattered marks. Bore retains largely intact rifling showing areas of pitting heaviest towards muzzle. (01-20092/DS). ANTIQUE. $1,200-1,800.
