BATTERY GUN COMPANY 1862 BLACK POWDER GATLING GUN.

Cal. 357 Black Powder. S# 0309. Bbl. 28”. A full scale, functional reproduction of the iconic 1862 Battery Gun. These guns boasted a large round brass receiver with an exposed 6-barrel cluster. This gun has a heavy-duty rectangular name plate with the style original Gatling nomenclature, directly behind the feed mechanism that reads; “GATLING BATTERY GUN / PAT. NOVEMBER 4, 1862 / PATENTS PENDING / SERIAL NUMBER 0309 / THE BATTERY GUN COMPANY / METAMORA MICHIGAN, USA”. Running parallel with the barrel cluster are 2 steel frame rails on either side. The feed mechanism is very similar in aesthetics to the familiar “Bruce Feed” system, however, instead of feeding cartridges down the front, held captive by the rimmed case, this rectangular feed chute holds 22 individual chamber capsules inside, gravity fed. These chamber capsules must be preloaded w/ black powder in the same fashion as a traditional muzzle loader. During operation, as the gun is cycled the individual capsules drop into the chamber section of the rotary mechanism, lined up w/ an individual barrel. As the mechanism is rotated clockwise by use of the right-side mounted crank, when the loaded barrel reaches the 1 O’Clock position it is fired, and when that barrel reaches the 5 O’Clock position, the chamber capsule drops free, beneath the gun, ready for reloading. Each capsule measures 2.25” in length and 0.86” in diameter. Sighting is accomplished via use of a heavy brass blade mounted on the front barrel band. Gun is mounted on a heavy tripod w/ 360-degree traverse ability and several degrees of elevation adjustment through use of a screw driven sighting wheel at the rear of the receiver. Tripod has wooden legs w/ steel feet and top covers. Cast yoke w/ steel swivel plates. It is very strong and equally impressive to look at. MAGAZINES: 2 top mounted rectangular magazines, each able to hold 22 loading cylinders. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: 40 loading cylinders. CONDITION: fit & finish is tight & precise. All outward appearances indicate that it has possibly never been fired. The finish inside the mechanism indicates some turning, with light thinning in areas of mechanical intervention. All bores are bright & shiny w/ sharp rifling. Fire control mechanism appears to function correctly when cycled by hand. (01-21572/JZ). ANTIQUE. $6,000-9,000.
