SPRING ACTION SLIDE AND DROP DOUBLE SHOTGUN BY A. HAETGE HOFFBUCHSENMACHER OF BERLIN. Cal. 12 Ga., 2 1/2". S# 1239. Guns of this type were made during the needlefire era, however this gun accepts & fires standard 12 ga., 2 1/2" ammunition. The 29" Twist Steel bbls. slide forward and then tip down being retained & operated by a long forward pivoting lever in a manner similar to the more well known Collath system. The metal portion of the top rib at rear is engraved w/ makers name, title & address. Remainder of the rib is of wood & extends to bbl. retaining band at muzzles which holds front bead. Breech portion of bbls. is engraved w/ acanthus motifs & has gold wire inlay. A sling eye is soldered to bottom of bbl. set. The action body is rounded & the firing mechanism consists of 2 coil spring loaded plungers at top in line w/ bores. Pushing each plunger forward cocks the action. This interesting arrangement has all parts deeply relief engraved w/ overall scrolling acanthus & flowers which surrounds well detailed portraits of game at breech ends of firing mechanism & on sides of action. A fox w/ duck in its mouth is on left firing tube & a roebuck is on right. Left side of action depicts a group of quail, a nye of pheasant are on right. Trigger guard is nicely carved of horn. There is also a horn tip on opening lever. Very fine, beautifully marbled European walnut straight grip buttstock measures 14 3/8" over a ribbed horn buttplate. Stock has a deep swept right hand cheekpiece. Grip & breech area are fully checkered. A steel sling button is on toeline. MEASUREMENTS: BARRELS: Bore dia: left - .716 , right - .717. Choke restrictions, left - .cyl., right - cyl. Wall thickness: left - .043, right - .049. STOCK: DAH: 2 1/2". DAC: 1 5/8". LOP: 14 3/8" Neutral cast. Weight: 8 lbs., 3 oz. CONDITION: very good as partially refinished. Bbls. retaining a considerable amount of what appears to be their original brown finish. Twist pattern evident. Action is lightly cleaned & is nearly all a pleasing pewter gray w/ dark background giving dramatic presentation of superb engraving. Buttstock is refinished & retains nearly all of a glossy varnish. Checkering haphazardly recut. Bores are shiny w/ a bit of frosting. Action is tight & operates well. (01-20671/MGM). ANTIQUE. $1,500-2,500.
