BERGMANN MODEL 1896 NO. 3 SEMI-AUTO PISTOL.
Cal. 6.5 Bergmann. S# 1736. Bbl. 4 1/2". Second design of Model 1896 known as No. 3 w/ fixed sights; not target. Mfg. w/ extractor although primary extraction from blow back functioning. Uses 5 rd. stripper clips that eject out of bottom when consumed. Later bbl. retention of being screwed in rather than lug retained. Bbl. designed for easy removal to do maintenance & secured w/ screw on left side; as common to all, it is stamped "7". Numerous crown U proofs. Left rear of bbl. marked "278" to indicate bore diameter. Rear of bolt numbered "6." & bolt latch numbered "4". Matching numbered checkered walnut grips w/out logos. Trigger numbered "11". No. 3 models incorporate dust cover over bolt. Total quantity mfg. approx. 4,400. Small parts such as trigger & hammer were originally strawed. Left side of bbl. extension w/ distributor marking of: "Westley Richards & Co.". Later production model outsourced to V. C. Schilling as indicated by bearded miner symbol having "Guggenau" above miner along w/ "V.C.S." & "Suhl" at base of miner in oval. CONDITION: good overall original appearance w/ scattered marks & high point wear. Peppery oxidation appearance throughout w/ beginning patina tones. Fair grips w/ wear & numerous light marks. Proper mechanical hand functioning. Good to very good bore. (01-17484/NW). ANTIQUE. $2,000-3,500.
