BRITISH CONTRACT COLT MODEL 1911 SEMI-AUTO PISTOL.

Cal. 455 Webley. S# W 29066. Bbl. 5" with crown "P" and crown "V" at port plus "5" in front of legs. Mfg. 1915 fulfilling 1915 contract that was completed by 1916. Many proofed with broad arrow but this one has crown "V" immediately behind cocking grooves at top of slide side and on frame below thumb safety. Many contract models had "E" for English stamped by disconnector; this one has only "Y" (also on left rear of trigger guard). Another slight variation from Colt was an increase in width of magazine well to accommodate the 455 Webley cartridge; this magwell measures approximately .572" whereas a standard 45 ACP measures about .556". Frame and slide markings are correct to include "VP" on left front of trigger guard; additionally import marked "BV LYNDEN WA" on edge of mag. well plus "J.J" on underside of frame above "VP" proof. In addition to British contract and governmental markings some were purchased individually by British officers. Colt checkered walnut grips with 15 rows between double diamonds. Checkered slide stop and thumb safety; both with milled undercut. Correct U notch rear sight and corresponding front. MAGS: 1 two tone broad arrow marked 45 ACP mag; .537" width rather than wider 455 Webley width (England received Colts in both calibers). CONDITION: good to very good overall original appearance w/ high point wear and occasional very light pitting. Original finish shows light wear and beginning patina in grip area. Light takedown scratch. Flat area of slide stop with matte finish plus gloss finish on thumb safety; both with faint milling marks. Good grips show light wear; upper screws are worn plus bottom screws have oxidation. Fair bore with wear and even dark pitting in grooves. (22-5474). CURIO. $2,000-3,000.
