HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE: The Snider-Enfield was Britain's first widely issued metallic-cartridge breechloading service rifle. This example is the three-band Long Rifle / Infantry Rifle configuration, characterized by its approximately 36½" barrel. The Mk III incorporated the improved positively latched breechblock and steel barrel. Long Rifles were issued to infantry and used throughout the British Empire, including Canada.
