MKI NO. III LEE ENFIELD BOLT ACTION MILITARY RIFLE. Cal. 303 Brit. S# C49953. Bbl. 25". Numbers match on receiver, bolt, forend & bayonet lug. Standard Small Arms Co. of Birmingham was taken over by the British government & became National Rifle Factory No. 1 in 1918 & mfg. rifles as part of the pedaled scheme rifle production. Butt socket is marked on right side w/ crown "GR" "1918" "SHT L.E." "star". Receiver is also marked behind safety w/ "SSA" "P" "42". Receiver ring marked w/ British proofs. Trigger guard is marked "S.S.A" at forward end. Tangent rear sight graduated to 2,000 yards. Bbl. is marked "HV" under sight. Blade front sight. Nose cap has protective ears & bayonet mt. Buttstock, forend & rear handguard are walnut. Front handguard is hardwood. Brass trap buttplate. Buttstock has brass disk on right side. Disk is marked "D/P" "PCL" indicating rifle to be issued for drill purpose. MAGS: 1 detachable 10 rd. CONDITION: stock set has original finish w/ moderate wear, scratches & handling marks throughout. Metal has early arsenal rework finish turning gray & patina. Bore is shiny but w/ heavily worn lands. (22-598/RW). CURIO. $300-500.
