The Project

Black Bear Hunt in partnership with the Wild Sheep Society of British Colombia
Currently there have been no Dall sheep research projects in British Columbia to date. Many of the Dall’s sheep population in BC are cross-border populations with the Yukon. Understanding range use of Dall’s sheep in the area south-west of Carcross, can help managers from the Yukon and BC better understand how to implement harvest strategies. The areas in the Yukon are currently closed to licenced harvest, whereas on the BC side there is limited opportunity through a Limited Entry Hunting (LEH) system for residents, and guide outfitters on quota. Recent years have indicated high levels of <8-year-old rams being harvest and an increase in non-licensed harvest. Collecting information on habitat use, range delineation, health, and population trends for this cross boundary herd of Dall’s sheep, will help inform sound management.

Some key objectives of this prospective project are to deploy up to 30 GPS collars targeting the cross-boundary area specifically within the identified project area. Then to capture, and sample male (Class 2 and Class 3 rams) and female (age 2+) sheep. Following the GPS deployment a 3 year continued study will ensue to determine the seasonal home ranges for sheep along the BC/Yukon Border. This will help identify important habitat features including natal and rut range, and mineral licks, as well as historical range use, and enhanced population information to determine trends through inventory, and demographic analysis. Health sampling of all captured sheep using the WAFWA-WSWG health sampling guidelines will occur, and mortality investigations for all sheep mortalities will take place.

Some of the prospective funding partners are: the Wild Sheep Society of British Columbia, Wild Sheep Foundation- Yukon, Wild Sheep Foundation – Eastern Chapter through GIA program, Wild Sheep Foundation, Province of British Columba (in-kind), Yukon Territory (in-kind)
