British L42A1 Lee-Enfield Bolt Action Sniper Rifle, with Telescope, #S33077, 7.62x51mm cal., 27.5'' barrel, black painted finish, hardwood stock, blade front sight with protective ears and adjustable folding rear sight. Marked on left side of receiver with the Enfield Arsenal final conversion designation and date ''L42A1D71'', and also a ''Tall T'', and on left side of action body the dispersal code of the original mfg'r (BSA-Shirley) and date of production ''M/47C 1945''. ''TR'' (target range) is also stamped. Marked on right side of receiver lug with a vertical ''S''. Enfield onsite examiner's marks are stamped on each side of bolt channel. ''19T'' is engraved on bolt handle and bolt head and stamped on right side of bolt channel. Magazine case is marked ''CR141A 65'' and does not lock fully into the magazine well. Back sight aperture has been ground off. Sniper style sling swivel fitted to forward triggerguard. Forend tie strap has been arsenal repaired by having new piece of wood glued in. Matching numbers on bolt handle and forend, mismatched number on magazine. Buttstock appears to be a replacement and is not marked with the Holland and Holland dispersal code. Original scope number has been ground off and the serial number for the current rifle (S33077) has been stamped. ''L'' stamped on buttstock. Hammer forged heavy barrel. (Ref. the book ''British Enfield Rifles, Vol. 2'', by Charles R. Stratton, pages 17 & 138.) Condition overall is very good with approx. 85% of the black painted finish remaining on metal surfaces, with scratches on the barrel and finish wear on the front sight and receiver. Wood shows considerable use with overall scratches and handling marks. The area around the toe has no finish remaining. Action is smooth, bright bore is excellent. #3 bolt head shows greater than normal over travel when tightened. No visible import stamps. Telescope bracket is stamped ''KD'' and is stamped with the current rifle serial number; two other serial numbers have been barred out. Scope is marked ''TEL STG No 32 MK III'', which has been barred out, along with ''AK&S'' and ''1946'' and a NATO stock number engraved. Range and deflection drums click smoothly. Bracket and scope show considerable finish wear from hard use; scope optics are clear. In wooden chest tagged ''CHEST RIFLE 7.62 MM L42 A1'', and scope case stamped ''TELESCOPE STRAIGHT SIGHTING CASE L1A1''. Both are serial number matched to rifle and scope. Chest shows heavy use and is painted in multiple colors. (No equipment included.) Scope case has overall scratches to paint. Commercial leather sling is included. Est.: $4,000-$6,000.
