British Pattern 1853 Enfield Rifled Musket, #NVSN, .577 cal., 39"round barrel, bright finish with brass forend tip, trigger guard, and buttplate; hardwood stock. Blade front sight and adjustable folding leaf rear sight with wide "V"-notch, graduated to 900 yards. Includes an iron rammer. Lockplate is decorated with two-line engraving around the edges and is marked with a "(Crown)" and "1862/TOWER". Left side of the barrel breech is stamped with two "(crossed scepters)25" proof stamps, and a deeply struck possible "(view stamp)/J.P.". Hammer is also decorated with two-line engraving and six additional flame type cuts across the flat. Toe of the buttstock is stamped "Collins & Pountney", a private Birmingham gun maker, and there is a small stamp on the left side stock flat below the rear screw. Condition overall is very good. The iron parts show evidence of old cleaning that has toned darker, with scattered areas of patina. There is old fine pitting around the knox form, nipple, and tang. Wood is very good, with an even darkened finish, showing scratches and handling marks. Additionally, there is a 1"grain crack to the middle/rear on the right side of the buttstock. Action operates smoothly and holds on full and half-cock. The darkened bore rates good with defined rifling. Est.: $800-$1,200. (Antique)
