British Single Shot Flintlock Cavalry Carbine, in the style of the Paget Carbine, NVSN, approx. .65 cal. smoothbore, 20'' round steel barrel marked ''(crown and crossed swords)/M/(crown & crossed swords)'' at breech ahead of cannon-turned rings; no sights on barrel. Iron lockplate marked ''(crown)/1/BR..'' (illegible) with long pointed taper at rear; long iron slide bar and sling ring attached to brass serpentine sideplate opposite lock; brass triggerguard with long front tang teminating in what appears to be a crown, triggerguard bow engraved ''R5/E/43''; brass nose cap, two fancy ramrod thimbles and brass buttplate. Iron stud made integral under muzzle for hinged stirrup-type ramrod. Hardwood fullstock carved at lower thimble, behind lock and barrel tang, and at comb. Appears to be in original flintlock configuration with no apparent alteration or re-bushing of touchhole. Condition is good+ as untouched, showing clear markings and fairly smooth but aged iron parts, expected black powder erosion at touchhole area, and age toned brass. Stock is sound with normal age and use marks, minor losses where the rear barrel pin was replaced with a screw, and good color. Ramrod stirrup and original ramrod are missing, the latter replaced by an iron rod with button head. Action is tight and smooth; bore is dark. Carbines of this type were used by the British Army in the Peninsular Wars and the Waterloo Campaign, and by Mexican forces at the Battle of the Alamo and during the Mexican-American War of 1846-1848. Est.: $2,000-$3,000. (Antique)
