British Trade Pattern Mark III Snider Carbine, #NVSN, .577 cal., 18.5" barrel, bright finish, hardwood stock, inverted-"V" front sight, and adjustable folding leaf rear sight. Marked on right side of the lockplate "(Crown)/TOWER" and "(TOWER)/1883" over an earlier manufacturer's name. Top of lock stamped with partial "B.S.A. Co." and "SNIDER(S Arrow) PATENT" over Birmingham inspection stamp. Left side of the barrel is marked "25" twice, indicating 25 bore (.577 cal.), Fitted with a brass nipple protector on a brass chain. Made by the Birmingham gun trade for sale to governments and individuals worldwide using surplus and new parts. This model was characterized by having the improved locking latch on the breechblock and a steel barrel (not marked as such on this example). Condition overall is good. Metal has been partially cleaned, resulting in a mottled appearance. Brass trigger guard has a darker patina. Forend has been checkered forward of the barrel band, and six tacks have been added forward of the buttplate tang. "IOS" has been carved into left side of the buttstock. Condition is otherwise good showing handling marks to the dark finish. Action functions smoothly. Bore with pitting scattered throughout. Est.: $500-$700. (Antique)
