Broad Canyon Customs Hand Made Knife and Sheath
Custom hand made knife by is designed, crafted, and perfected by Jan Vaterlaus. No work is done outside of the Broad Canyon Custom Shop or by other apprentices. The variety of design and materials is endless with his approach to incorporate native woods and historical steel. Most of the Broad Canyon knives are made from new manufactured steel but others are made from farming equipment parts, sawmill bandsaw blades, abandoned logging cable from his elk hunting area, and a cutting edge of a snow plow blade. He uses new manufactured steel but enjoys bringing old steel back to life. He has studied heat treating the different types of steel and the proper tempering cycles to provide the strongest and sharpest blades available. During his hiking and hunting adventures he harvests wood to be made into handles and spacers. He has Owyhee Juniper, Mountain Mahogany (a type of rosewood found in the Idaho high desert), and Yew Wood from the banks of the Salmon River. He also uses Cherry, Walnut, Box Elder, Ironwood, African Blackwood, Ebony, and many other species. He has the equipment to professionally dye and stabilize any wood to offer strength and variety. Guards, spacers, liners, and other accent pieces can be crafted from brass, copper, nickel silver, stainless steel, and his own Damascus steel. Given the variety of materials available and that each knife is handcrafted there will never be two knives alike. Each knife comes with a handcrafted leather sheath that could range from a simple pouch sheath to an intricate patterned or inlaid sheath.
