Brown Mfg. Co. Merrill Patent Model 1871 Bolt Action Rifle, #NVSN, .58 Berdan CF cal., 33.75" barrel, bright finish, hardwood stock with three barrel bands, inverted-"V" front sight, and adjustable folding leaf rear sight with "V"-notched grooves; graduated to 900 yards. Includes an iron rammer. Marked "BROWN MFG. Co. NEWBURYPORT. MASS./PATENTED OCT.17.1871" on the bolt body. Rifle has been converted from a British 1853 Pattern Enfield musket and there is an original "BIRMINGHAM SMALL ARMS TRADE" stamp on right side of the buttstock. Condition overall is good, metal has been cleaned; now bright, showing some areas of toning and patina. Stock is cracked on both sides of the wrist and has been stabilized with five small nails on the left side. Otherwise, showing expected age and wear. Action and external hammer operate smoothly.
