Burgess Model 1897 Slide-Action Folding Shotgun, #3246, 12 ga., 19.5'' barrel, blue finish, smooth walnut stock, checkered cocking piece and forend; factory German silver front sight blade. Top of bolt marked ''Burgess Gun Co., Buffalo, N.Y., U.S.A.'' Original Burgess checkered hard rubber buttplate with game dog and bird is retained. The quality of this firearm is excellent, however short lived, as it was purchased in its entirety in 1899 by Winchester, who withdrew the Burgess product from the market to protect their own. This example, the rare ''Folding Gun'', is hinged on the underside of receiver with a lift lever over the chamber area as its release. When first issued, it was advertised as ''...especially adapted for police service, express messengers, U.S. marshals, and prison and bank guards.'' Condition is excellent retaining approx. 92% original factory blue, with losses as thinning and toning to high edges of frame and to the barrel just forward the takedown latch; bottom area forward the trigger guard with light general scratching. Stock shows only the lightest impressions to rear portion; minor knackering and oil darkening to forend; checkered hard rubber buttplate is nearly perfect. Action is crisp, bore is mirror bright. An excellent example of a scarce, unique and desirable American firearm. Est.: $6,000-$8,000. (Antique)
