CAPTAIN JOHN P. CADY GROUPING INCLUDING PORTUGUESE

ORDER OF AVIZ. Captain Cady was the chief legal counsel for Capt. McKey who was the captain of the USS Indianapolis. The USS Indianapolis was the ship that carried the uranium used in the atomic bombs that were dropped on Japan in the summer of 1945. Capt. McKey was brought up on charges when his ship was sunk by Japanese submarines during travel from Tinian to Guam after dropping off its top secret cargo of uranium. Capt. Cady defended Capt. McKey against these charges. The tragic events surrounding the Indianapolis & Capt. McKey are one of the darkest points in naval history. McKey was convicted of not zigzagging his ship in enemy waters & later committed suicide. This group includes Capt. Cady’s dress white uniform w/ 8 award ribbon bar, his Portuguese Order of Aziz for a Grand Officer that includes the neck order & breast star, as well as a miniature of the medal w/ spare ribbon all in original case. The group further includes his WWII & Korea medals & miniatures of the same along w/ associated ribbon bars. There is a case that includes captain’s shoulder boards, hat insignia, buttons, various ribbon bars & naval buckles. There is what appears to be an Annapolis portrait of Cady in uniform. A book titled, “Abandon Ship” which tells the story of the USS Indianapolis by Richard Newcomb, which Cady assisted with, is included in the group. A Parade magazine article from 2000, correspondence between Newcomb & Cady & several photographs of the Indianapolis & Capt. McKey are included in the lot.
