Carmen Island is a privately owned, 60 square mile island in the Gulf of California, near Loreto, Baja California Sur. In 1995 a number of wild sheep were captured and placed upon the island. That same year, Carmen Island was designated as a preserve to provide a protected environment for the O. c. weemsi sub-species of desert bighorn sheep. In 1995 and 1996, 22 ewes and four rams were successfully released on the island. This was a propagation project to place the animals in a protected area with no predators and a anti-poaching program. It has worked quite well. A recent survey of bighorn sheep on the island estimated over 500 animals. This program has been so effective, that sheep have been captured and transferred from the island for release on the peninsula, almost 100 sheep have been released. One permit will be available. After years of a well-planned management program, high quality rams have been harvested with an impressive record of 100% success with rifle and bow hunters.
