LEVER ACTION RIFLE. Cal. 38 WCF (38-40). S# 148028A. Bbl. 24" oct. Sporting front sight w/ adj. rear sight. Button mag. Case colored action. Forearm cap & crescent steel trapdoor buttplate. Rifle forearm & pistol grip stock w/ ebony insert of checkered fancy walnut. Left inside of lower tang marked w/ assembly number “5362” followed by cal. Marking “38”, wood grade marking “XX” & “R”. Top tang channel of stock & inside toe of buttplate have matching assembly number “5362”. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: Cody Firearms Museum letter dated Oct. 25, 2005 stating: “Rifle. 38 caliber. Barrel Shape: Octagon. Casehardened. Plain trigger. Checkered stock with pistol grip. 1/2 magazine. Receiver in warehouse on July 12, 1884. Shipped from warehouse on July 12, 1884, order number 13398. Returned and repaired June 3, 1887, order number 18797. No other information available for this serial number”. 4 Piece steel cleaning rod held in stock compartment. CONDITION: bbl. retains over 80% dull, lightly faded blue showing edge wear. Action, hammer & trigger lever retain over 30% lightly visible case colors fading to silver & blending w/ spots of dark patina. Buttplate has faded to gray w/ spots of dark patina. Original wood finish shows moderate wear w/ numerous scratches & sm. handling marks. Checkering shows light wear. German silver front sight blade is thinned. Sound mechanics. Bright bore w/ sharp rifling shows a few sm. dark spots. (01-20196/DS). ANTIQUE. $9,000-15,000.
