COMMANDED IRONCLAD USS KEOKUK DURING CIVIL WAR. English japanned epaulet casing w/ attached brass plaque inscribed “Captain A. C. Rhind / United States Navy”. Casing contains pair of gilt epaulets, 23 USN buttons (13-25mm, 10-16mm) made by Joseph Starkey, London. Starkey made high quality buttons during the Civil War for Union & Confederate navies. Also in casing is a sm. silver bullion “fouled anchor” insignia, cabinet card photograph of Rhind in naval uniform & 2.5" brass encased compass w/ New York maker. Buttons & insignia are stitched 2 piece of cloth for family display, the image must of been also as it is light faded. Alexander C. Rhind (1827-1897) had a long & illustrious naval career, retiring as Rear Admiral. His biography can be found in online link. CONDITION: buttons are fine overall, a few w/ bent shank’s retaining most of their original gilt. Epaulets probably predate war, no attached insignia, thin gilt tassels w/ silk pillows & backing. Overall fair w/loose bullion, tears in silk, 23mm silver fouled anchor insignia was possibly attached epaulet at some time. Photograph is poor, very light. Compass fair, missing cover glass. Casing is fair displays well w/ scuffs & losses of japanned decoration. Interior red baize is soiled, unglued. The central pedestal box is un-soldered & no longer attached to bottom.
