CASED PAIR JEAN BAPTISTE REVOL NEW ORLEANS

DUELING OR TARGET PISTOLS. Cal. 14 Bore (approx 68 cal). NSN. Jean Baptiste Revol (1799-1886) was possibly the best New Orleans gun maker. Revol was born in Mexico, though his obituary says France, & first appears in New Orleans city directories in 1842. 16" Overall. 10" Oct. 14 bore smoothbore bbls. have inset front & rear sights. Each gun is numbered in fancy script "1" & "2" at breech. Sm. gold oval escutcheons have script logo initials of owner. Locks have serpentine percussion hammers w/ engraved shanks, engraved locks "J.B. REVOL / N. ORLEANS". Iron mounted w/ spurred trigger guards. These are unusually lg. bore (size of full choke 12 Ga. shotgun) for target pistols unless the target is another person. Bbls. are held in place by engraved screw & escutcheon on bottom of forestock. The gun numbers "1" & "2" are half engraved on breech & half on bbl. so they could not be mistakenly put back together wrong. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: accompanying casing is compartmented for pistols, flask, 2 screw drivers, cap tin & "REVOL" marked brass capper. CONDITION: very good overall, gray metal, good markings, sound stocks w/ hand worn patina. Mechanically fine w/ precision "hair triggers", made w/out external adjustments. Bores are clear & smooth. Accompanying casing is very good, as are accessories. PROVENANCE: Collection of John Montague. (01-20742/JS). ANTIQUE. $4,000-5,000.
