CIRCA 1770 HESSIAN MUSKET OF THE REVOLUTIONARY

WAR ERA. Cal. approx. 72. NSN. Bbl. measures 39 1/2". Round barrel turns octagon 2 1/2" from the breech. Blade sight on the rear band of the nose cap. The touch hole has been rebushed with brass in the period of use but the musket is not a reconversion. No proofs are noted. Large, unmarked lock plate with heavy unreinforced cock. Iron trigger guard, buttplate, side plate, barrel bands, nose cap and sling swivels. Musket has a modern replacement cotton canvas and leather sling. Fine walnut stock stenciled near the butt, "27" in white paint. Judging by the style of the stencil, it is likely a mid to early 1800's rack or inventory number. CONDITION: barrel has a medium gray patina with scattered spots of discoloration. The lock, as well as other irons parts, has a similar medium gray patina. Lock holds both full and half cock. Stock shows numerous minor dents and dings as would be expected in a 250 year old musket. Very fine bore is just a bit dirty. PROVENANCE: from the Collection of Rick Hudak, author of, "Harpers Ferry Arsenal and Joseph Perkin". (01-20959/BF). $2,000-3,000.
