CIRCA 1800-1815 FEDERAL EAGLE HEAD OFFICER’S
SABER. Overall length: 34 1/2". Blade length: 27". Blade has a single very wide fuller with no evidence of etching. Brass hilt with a single branch rudimentary 5 ball guard and downturned quillon. Knuckle bow has a central 3 ball decoration. Crudely formed eagle head pommel with a small loop below the beak. Reeded bone grip. Gilded brass mounted leather scabbard. CONDITION: this blade has a medium gray mottled patina. The hilt has a very pleasing rich mustard patina. There is a repair to the knuckle bow just above the top ball. The scabbard has lost most of its original finish, but the remaining leather has been darkened. Mounts retain most of their original gilding. The rear seam is open over most of the length of the scabbard and the integrity of the leather is a bit weak. There is a small hanging strap near the throat. It is quite likely that this scabbard was not born with this sword. (02-19201/BF). $1,200-1,800.
