CIRCA 1810-1825 FEDERAL ERA MOUNTED OFFICER’S
SABER BY WOLFE. Overall length: 38". Blade length: 32 3/8". Blade has a single wide fuller and appears to have had tri-color decoration, but the wear and patina make this impossible to confirm. The blade is etched over half its length with various military, patriotic & foliate motifs, including a large American eagle and an Indian Princess. The spine of the blade is stamped “Sold by C & J D Wolfe New York”. Gilded brass hilt with a very interesting 8 pointed star on the round languets. Relatively plain guard with an acanthus leaf decorated quillon. Alternating smooth & serrated twist knuckle bow joins a pommel & backstrap decorated with stars similar to the languets. Intricately carved bone grip. Gilded brass scabbard stamped on the central suspension ring “A J NEELY”. CONDITION: blade has a dark overall patina. There are some gold highlights remaining in the etching. Traces of the blued field do remain. The edge of the blade has a few nicks and is a bit loose in the hilt. The entire hilt retains 60% of its original gilding. The grip has several tight age cracks, some of which have been reinforced with glue. The scabbard has several small dents and retains about 1/2 of its original gilding. (02-19183/BF). $800-1,400.
