CIRCA 1820-1835 MODIFIED BIRD’S HEAD POMMEL
INFANTRY FOOT OFFICER’S SWORD. Overall length: 35 3/4". Blade length 31". Blade has a single wide fuller with gold highlighted military & foliate motifs on a blued field over 1/3 of its length. Gilded brass hilt with eagle embellished languets on both sides. Downturned quillon and plain reverse P knuckle bow. The bird’s head style pommel has a fully articulated eagle decorating the top. Intricately carved bone grip. No scabbard. CONDITION: blade has a medium gray patina with scattered darkened areas. The gold highlights are quite strong and the blued field begins to fade near the ricasso. Hilt is quite solid, but retains only traces of its original gilding. Grip has a single tight age crack from pommel to ferrule. (02-19207/BF). $400-600.
