CIRCA 1825-1840 INFANTRY OFFICER’S SWORD.
This foot officer’s sword measures 37 1/2" overall with a blade length of 31 1/2”. The blade has a single medium fuller and has gold highlighted etching on a blued field over 11 1/2" of the blade. Etching includes foliate motifs & sprays of arms. Gilded brass hilt with a Medusa head languet on the front. Plain guard with downturned, lightly embellished, cylindrical fuller. Highly embellished reverse P knuckle bow leads to a well-articulated eagle head pommel atop a plain backstrap. Grip is intricately carved bone. Gilded brass scabbard with foliate embellishments. CONDITION: blade has a light gray patina with 80% of the blued field remaining, and 20% of the gold highlights. Hilt retains approx. 35% of its original gilded finish. Grips have a few tight age cracks. Scabbard retains traces of its original gilded finish and has a few minor shallow dents. (02-20052/BF). $600-900.
