CIRCA 1835-1850 MILITIA INFANTRY OFFICER’S SWORD.
Overall length: 37 1/2". Blade length: 31 1/4". Blade has a central narrow fuller and is etched over 2/3 of its length with various patriotic & foliate motifs, including a perched droop-wing eagle. Gilded brass hilt with embellished cruciform guard & shell style languets. Pommel depicts a fully articulated American eagle perched on a globe with a federal shield on its chest. Chain knuckle bow runs between a quillon & the eagle’s mouth. Intricately carved bone grip. Gilded brass scabbard with central American eagle. CONDITION: blade shows a light gray patina and etching is a bit light, but easily discernable. Hilt retains most of its original gilded finish. Grip has a few small tight age cracks. Scabbard has original gilding in the protected areas. There is a notable dent near the drag. (02-19284/BF). $700-1,000.
