CIVIL WAR CONFEDERATE WOODEN CANTEEN WITH
ARKANSAS HISTORY. This fine southern canteen measures approx. 7” in diameter & 2 1/4" in width. It is bound w/ 2 riveted iron straps & supported by 3 iron sling guides. Each end is formed from a single piece of wood w/ the sides being several pieces of wood closely joined together. The spout is pewter & the stopper is a sm. portion of a corn cob. Canteen has a leather sling w/ iron buckle. 1 Side of the canteen bares the inscription, “Rebel Canteen taken at St. Charles Arkansas By Charles Hudson on the 10th day of January 1863” & has a “B M” carved into the face of the canteen. The opposite side reads, “Laura Hudson Whitewater Walworth Co. Wisconsin From C. Hudson” & has a “B” carved into the side of the canteen. Charles Hudson was a musician attached to Company D of the 28th Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry Regiment. In January of 1863, the 28th Wisconsin was detached from Gorman’s Expedition up the White River & was placed in charge of St. Charles, Arkansas. It is likely during this time that Hudson acquired the canteen. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: a booklet of information pertaining to the canteen & its original purchase from the Gettysburg Sutler, George Lower. Canceled checks are also included from Ron Tunison, who purchased the canteen for $595.00 in 1981. CONDITION: canteen generally shows light wear & has a wonderful, original, deep patina. Leather sling is a bit dry. A beautiful rebel canteen. (02-14724/BF). $1,500-2,500.
