CIVIL WAR ERA M1840 CAVALRY OFFICER'S SABER WITH

ASSOCIATED TINTYPE. Overall length: 41". Blade length: 34". Blade has a single wide fuller and a single 17" narrow fuller near the spine. The blade has a 6 1/2" etched panel on each side with 1 panel featuring a spread winged American eagle in glory and the other featuring "U S". The ricasso is stamped, "P. D. L." in a dotted oval which stands for Peter D. Luneschloss of Solingen, Prussia. This fine cavalry officer's saber was likely imported by Tiffany & Co. of New York. Gilded brass hilt with foliate embellishment on the 2 branches, the pommel and the quillon area. Wire wrapped sharkskin grip. Darkened iron scabbard. The tintype, according to family history, is of the owner of this sword. He is wearing an officer's cavalry shell jacket with lieutenant's shoulder straps. His kepi has early metal, false embroidered, crossed cavalry sabers on the front. In the photograph, he is clutching a circa 1840 infantry officer's sword, likely used as a prop by the photographer. This sword would be correct for the officer pictured in the tintype. CONDITION: the sword has a medium gray finish and the etching remains quite clear. Hilt shows areas of original gilding mixed with patinaed brass. Sharkskin grip shows some wear and is about 90% complete. Wire is worn but 100% present. Scabbard has 1 shallow dent near the drag along with a bit of scattered oxidation. The tintype remains quite clear. There is some verdigris on the mat. The case shows wear but is undamaged. (02-17424/BF). $2,000-3,000.
