CIVIL WAR PERIOD NON REGULATION OFFICER’S SWORD.
Overall length: 39 1/4". Blade length: 31 1/2". Blade has a single wide fuller with a single narrow fuller near the spine. Blade is etched over half its length with various foliate, military & patriotic motifs. Brass hilt with semi-basket guard featuring a cutout American eagle over a “US”. Stepped pommel with fully formed American eagle on the top. Plain backstrap with ears on both sides. Copper wire wrapped tarred canvas grip. Gilded brass mounted sharkskin scabbard. It is quite likely this sword was assembled from various parts belonging to different swords and the grip was rewrapped. CONDITION: blade has a medium gray patina with significant wear to the etching. Hilt has a nice patina but is slightly bent. Finish on the eagle does not match the rest of the hilt. Grip is likely rewrapped. Scabbard appears to be for an M1850 staff & field. (02-19240/BF). $300-500.
