CIVIL WAR, POSSIBLY CONFEDERATE USED DRUM.

This drum appears "as found" with original ropes & heads. Drum was purchased in the 1960s from the U.D.C., Saint Elmo, Chattanooga, Tennessee. Over the years, a good many identified Confederate uniforms & other items are now in collections w/ this same oral history. Drum is standard regulation size snare, 16.5" diameter, 17" tall w/ tacked design around oct. pewter or lead vent hole. Leather tighteners appears contemporary w/ brass rivets. 35" Heavy cotton sling, 2" wide is still tied to ropes. CONDITION: overall good, missing a few tacks. Very rarely are Civil War era drums found w/ original ropes & tighteners. Good body & heads have old varnish that has chipped & scratches over the years. The bottom wood rim has 6" break & well patinaed 3" sliver missing. Sling is sound as tied & soiled. Heads are soiled & stained. Remnants of original catgut snare present on bottom as originally just tied into place. Drum is still playable. (02-16614/JS). $600-800.
