CIVIL WAR UNION BUMMERS CAP LIKELY OF THE 9TH
VERMONT INFANTRY. A fine example of the classic Union enlisted man’s headgear of the Civil War. This bummer’s cap has a blue wool body w/ a 6" rear seam. There is a stiffener in the crown & a brass “9” over “F” at the front of the crown. Leather chinstrap w/ single brass buckle & leather slide loop. Side buttons are correct brass enlisted eagles. Leather visor & sweatband. Interior polished cotton lining over coarsely woven burlap like material. This kepi was originally purchased from a northern Vermont estate thus it is assumed to be from Company F of the 9th Vermont Infantry. The 9th Vermont was stationed in Winchester, VA & moved to Harper’s Ferry, WV on Sept. 2, 1862. The entire unit was captured at Bolivar Heights on Sept. 14 & paroled in Annapolis, MD on Sept. 16. The unit served a variety of duties during the war w/ extensive service in & around New Berne, NC. Company F was detailed to Fort Spinola. The 9th then moved to Bermuda Hundred & were present at the siege of Petersburg and Richmond. They served as occupation forces in Richmond, VA & were mustered out Dec. 1, 1865. CONDITION: though extensively worn the cap is substantially solid w/ only a few very minor moth nips. The brass insignia are correct & have a pleasing mustard patina as do the side buttons. Chinstrap & visor show wear but are undamaged. Sweat band is complete but shows significant wear attesting to the lengthy service of its owner. Lining is a bit tattered w/ some losses. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: envelope of information on the 9th Vermont. PROVENANCE: From the Renowned Collection of Allen & Robin Wandling. (02-14003/BF). $1,500-2,200.
