COLLINS CIVIL WAR SIDE KNIFE.

16 1/2" Overall, 11 1/2" spear point blade “COLLINS & CO / HARTFORD”. Brass mounted w/ stacked leather grip. This pattern was designated by Collins as “1862 Hospital Corps Machete” even though the blade was size of a fighting knife, unlike the earlier 1858 true machete. Collins hoped to have a military contract, but the Hospital Corps was never established until many years later. Surplus knives were sold on the open market & are now classified Civil War secondary military knives. CONDITION: very good overall, blade is gray w/ staining & pitting. Tip is broken. Brass has been polished. Accompanying sheath fits well w/ brass tip, ball finial, no throat or attachment for belt. (02-15592/JS). $800-1,200.
