Cal. 45 Colt. S# 4285. Bbl. shortened to 5 1/2". After two decades of service, many Colt Cavalry Model revolvers were recalled for refurbishing after introduction of the 1892 Colt DA 38 caliber revolvers. Many of these have bbls. shortened to 5 1/2" & non matching S#'s. These revolvers have become known to collectors as Artillery Models as a reference to their use by artillery units in the Spanish-American War. Frame S# 4286 is stamped "U.S." on left side w/ "C" inspectors mark in hammer slot. Loading gate is no. 2543. Trigger guard & backstrap are no. 72170 w/ "G" inspectors mark on trigger guard. Bottom of bbl. is stamped "P". 6 Shot fluted cyl. has "RAC" inspectors marks at rear referring to sub inspector Rinaldo A. Carr. 1 Piece walnut grip. Butt of both panels have "RAC" inspectors marking, right panel has matching "RAC" cartouche. CONDITION: very fine. Bbl., cyl., grip straps & ejector housing retain over 80% bright blue showing carry & edge wear w/ cyl. drag line. Frame & hammer retain 60% lightly visible case colors. Unsanded grips show wear & handling marks. Action is sound & in time. Bore is bright w/ sound rifling. (01-21433/DS). ANTIQUE. $8,000-12,000.
