LOVE, 62ND NORTH CAROLINA. Cal. 36. S# 81516. Standard configuration w/ 4" oct. bbl. 2 Line New York address. 5 Shot cylinder w/ stagecoach holdup scene roll engraved. Inscribed on backstrap & butt strap in script engraving; “Col. R. G. A. Love” 62nd Regt. N. C. T.”. The inscription is in the style of the era & may be original or commemorative but cannot be guaranteed, as no further provenance is known. The Colt model 1849 predates the war & was made in 1853. Robert Gustavus Adolphus Love (1827-1880) entered service as captain May 4, 1861 & was promoted to lieutenant colonel June 17, 1861. 1860 Census shows him living w/ his father James R. Love on large farm in Wayneville, North Carolina. CONDITION: fine as refinished. Appears complete & matching other than missing wedge. Frame, loading assembly & hammer retain most of their muted & bright case colors as refinished. Bbl. & cylinder have traces of reblued finish, w/ overall gray patina. Cylinder has about 80% rolled stagecoach holdup scene visible w/ pinprick pitting. All 5 safety pins are functional. Grips are worn & revarnished. Backstrap & triggerguard retain virtually all their new silver plate. Markings including inscription are all crisp & easily discerned. Mechanically fine w/ well defined rifling in pitted bore.
